About their species
Nico and Cassy's species is a mixture of sea creatures breeding over time. One part of their blood is from the legendary Charybdis. Once a daughter of Poseidon, after angering Zeus, she was made into a sea monster. A monster that caused disruptive whirlpools which has claimed many sailors life. The life was cruel and all the blood of Charybdis lived in anger towards every species that breathed near them. Nico and Cassy both have anger problems which stem from the unwilling and uncontrollable urge to destroy and cause death that came with the punishment from Zeus. If in large bodies of water, they have an uncontrollable urge to attack boats, even in human form, their anger if provoked is deadly.
Their other blood relatives derive from Ningyo and Sea Witches. With Cassy taking after the Ningyo and Nico after a Sea Witch more.
With more Ningyo blood, Cassy resembles the common myth of merfolk. In water, he grows a tail in place of his human legs. A disgusting looking tail that resembles the look of tuna fish, with scarred scales and fins. His hands turn more into claws when in contact with water and more often, takes on a almost grey tone in his already pale skin. It is unknown whether Cassy has the properties of Ningyo, that if you eat his flesh you will live forever... But he is already far aware that he is a bad luck charm.
Nico was born with more Sea Witch blood than Ningyo. Although he has more of a western traditional idea look of the merfolk, it is the only part of the Ningyo that shows on him. Nico can preform witchcraft underwater, along with whirlpool control, he could grow to learn how to control currents in the water and even as minor as river currents. With most Sea Witch descending from species of Octopi, Nico has a changing pigment in his hair. Much like octopi, his hair changes colour to his emotion and surroundings and he had no control over it. However, it changes slowly enough he can make up some hair dye about it.
When on land, both are human as they can be.

History
Their lives were pretty low key till they made the choice to venture outwards into the world. Living in what resembled the portrayal of merfolk in Disney movies, they had always been aware that species wise, their genes were different, but there was no denying that they were brothers. While a lot of their community had been repulsed by the tail that Cassy had grown into, the fish tail that resembled a tuna fish tail rather than the colourful elegant tails the rest of them all had, Nico was happily accepted into the merfolk community. But that was just the beginning of the strange troubles that was going to plague their lives. The merfolk community they were born into had always been strict on bloodlines. Their parents both full merfolk, there was no question that they could not produce more mermaids and merman for the community. Yet, when Cassy had been born with his tail, questions were raised. And it wasn't still Nico's hair had started to change from a young age that questions were finally raised. The truth about their bloodline was far more vast than anyone realised. The mixture of species was beyond what anyone thought was possible.
Growing up, Nico was widely more accepted into the community despite his hair than Cassy ever was. His appearance often put others off wanting to go near him while Nico had grown into a coral red coloured tail. It wasn't till the visit of their grandparents that things went downhill for them. Their grandparents upon seeing Cassy's tail admitted the crossbreeding of species and how much of it had happened. That for centuries their family had not been pure merfolk and was originally part of the Charybdis blood line and Ningyo. But Nico had picked up the even more recessive blood of a Sea Witch. That it could have even been that a Sea Witch had not been dominant in their blood for centuries but some reason, the gene had come back up. Nico and Cassy started to stray from the their community and even their parents. Their parents were trying to keep up the image of being pure merfolk. That they were pure and somehow their kids had been corrupted. Even crying rape and cheating charges against each other, Nico and Cassy bonded with their grandparents, to try and understand their heritage more, and what to do, where to go to be accepted. Or even if they should even seek acceptance. With their parents refusal to accept them, they spoke about leaving before Cassy had his first prediction of bad luck. He predicted a storm would come their way, a powerful underwater earthquake would strike and destroy the community they know and love.
A few days into their departure and travelling, they found news of the community being destroyed by an underwater earthquake. Cassy was terrified of the truth in his words, that it had happened whereas Nico freaked. Knowing his brother held more of the Charybdis blood than he did, he feared the next time his brother saw a prediction and almost tried to leave him. But they remained together, not sure what to do, what to do with themselves. Just trying to find out more about who they were. Overtime, Nico found out about his Sea Witch blood and what he could do with it. That he could preform witchcraft and spells and learn to control current and tides. And Cassy found out more about the Ningyo. That his skin apparently gave humans eternal live and yet he was a feared creature since bad luck often followed their kind. When they tried to find out more about the Charybdis, they realised they touched upon demons that were better left unexplored. Finding out about the sea monster unlocked a darker side to them that they didn't know they had. Impulses and anger they had never felt before erupted. Urges to start whirlpools and anger towards Gods and men they never knew plagued them. Feeling the ancient anger of their ancestors towards Zeus for turning them into creatures that only destroyed Nico struggled more with his anger at his young age. He was terrified of what he could do with his ability to control currents and tides, now with the power to create whirlpools or power Cassy's, he fled his brother's side. Scared to hear Cassy make a prediction of death, scared to even move in case he created something deadly, he tried to swim away to the depth of the ocean, away from the surface.
Cas didn't go after his brother, instead he decided he was going to try and make this better. That there must be way to rid themselves of the anger and the need of destruction. That they still had to pay for Zeus' punishment to their ancestor. Finding someone, anyone who could help them, Cassy tried to ignore the damage he was creating wherever he went. Causing boats to sink, people to drown, even threatening underwater species. Damaging homes of the merfolk and sea elves, while all trying to keep his anger under control. When he found an ancient Sea Witch who vowed that she could help him, Cassy didn't think twice, just wanting to help his brother. He didn't think of the consequences on himself, only told that his brother's rage would be quenched finally and he'd be able to live without the anger. In return he had to bare the weight of Nico's anger and punishment on top of his. Face the death and destruction and never be free from it. Though it didn't matter, all that mattered was that Nico was free of it.
He found Nico a few weeks later, hiding in a broken down cave, cowering in the corner. Telling him what he did, Nico only freaked out at him, calling him stupid for that he would now have to bare so much unneeded death and destruction. Nico could barely leave the cave, not wanting to face the outside world and the power of his brother's anger. It took a good deal of convincing and strength that he didn't have to get Nico to leave the cave and the depths of the ocean, to go back to a brighter part of the world and be around people again. If he couldn't do it, he wasn't about to stand by and watch as Nico hid himself away. Cas tried to play it smarter, to try and stick to areas that were known for storms and whirlpools, seeing that his anger only made them worse instead of starting new ones. But emotionally it was taking his toll. Cas' rage caused him to have blackouts, to even go as far to have the power to control the weather and end up causing even more disruption. Now it was the younger brother's turn. Not able to carry on with his life knowing what his brother did and now had to suffer for him, he knew what could work. With his own spells and ideas that could work, he did the only thing he could think of and created a spell that would turn them human on land. Taking the concoction he made before grabbing a delirious Cas after a storm, he made him take it before both brothers ended up being washed on shore.
Getting used to human legs was the strangest thing they had ever experienced. Naked and unsure of where they had even washed up, the first days getting used to human life was just ... Odd. Suddenly their gills for breathing were gone, they had to use their mouth and exhale. They had two separate legs and didn't have to swim. Everything was out there in the open... Within a few hours they had stumbled upon a small town, out of sight of the humans, they snuck into someone's back lard and stole some clothes, that even being a strange concept to them. They made it to the next town before hunger took over, not even understanding the concept of money. Nico managed to get over his anxieties and use his charms to swing him and Cas a place to stay and help get back on their feet.
That was years ago... When they stayed on land. But it didn't solve everything, just the creation of storms, the destruction and death. Nico still deals with the aftermath of Cas. The man's nightmares and black outs, the fact they both still have the rage of the Charybdis within them. Just waiting to be unleashed again. The freak show came upon them one day, seeing their need for freaks, Cas decided to see if they could change back in water. Like he had heard some myths of their species. Finding a lake, he got his answer, that he did shift back, that he and Nico still retained their form. Even if Nico's hair still managed to change colour with his emotions and surroundings. Seeing an opening for the Fiji Mermaid and knowing the Ningyo's resemblance, Cas made a last promise to look after Nico and keep them both safe from the destruction they could cause.
